In 1960, the Nakano area of Shokawa-cho was to be submerged due to the construction of the MIBORO dam, and the cherry blossoms on the temple grounds were to suffer the same fate. However, the villagers wanted to save the cherry trees from being submerged somehow. They were told that it was impossible to transplant them, but miraculously the two cherry trees were revived. The Shokawa cherry blossoms bloom from late April to early May.
Shirakawa-go and Gokayama Gassho-Zukuri Village were registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995.
