Old town
Takayama is a mountain city in Gifu Prefecture. The narrow streets of Sanmachi-dori, where the old town still remains, are lined with numerous small museums and wooden merchant houses dating back to the Edo period. The Takayama Festival, held in spring and fall, is a historic festival that began in the mid-1600s and features gorgeous golden floats called yatai and karakuri dolls.
Shirakawa-go and Gokayama Gassho-Zukuri Village were registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995.
